Deirdre Dempster

Deirdre DempsterAbout 2 years ago I bought a needle-felting kit, to ‘give it a go’. I did not have high hopes as I never saw myself as creative or artistic.I realised that although I cannot paint or draw, I was able to mould the wool to the shape I wanted. It was also a form of relaxation, as it distracted me from negative stress coping habits. When I started needle-felting it kept my hands busy and all these negative habits happen much less now.

I craft on the couch, spending time with my family surrounded by piles of wool and needles! I love using the natural resource that we have in abundance and buy from the UK as much as possible. I am hoping very soon to use wool from my brother’s farm as the core for my creations.

I get inspiration from Scotland and my love of what I am surrounded by; Highland coos, black face sheep, seals, dolphins, Fairies, haggis and robins to name but a few of the items I have produced. I use pictures as a guide generally. Each piece of needle-felting will take anything from 1 hr for a very small piece with little detail, to many days, if it requires detail and shaping.
