Joy has been knitting, sewing and creating all of her life, however, the sock knitting bug got me a few years ago when her husband’s aunt told her how simple it was to turn a ball of yarn into a perfectly fitted pair of socks. She had a go and was hooked…to be honest it became a happy addiction.
Joy knitted socks for friends and family trying all sorts of yarn, different patterns and loved thinking about who she was knitting for as the needles clicked. During 2020 in lockdown, she knitted for those she loved, and posted ” foot cuddles” across the miles when we didn’t meet up because we wanted to keep each other safe.
She has had lots of commissions for ” special” feet, those that are extra narrow, extra wide or are deemed unusual shapes for all sorts of reasons and the satisfaction of making someone’s feet comfortable, warm, snug or able to wear their favourite style of footwear is huge.
Joy launched UNISOX to celebrate the differences and similarities in our legs and feet…they work so hard for us they deserve to be properly cared for.
She also believes that whatever size and shape your feet are they can be dressed in any colour or style. Adult size 12 in pink and orange stripes? No problem. Adult size 3 in rainbow colours with cloud cuffs? That’s fine by her!
All of her socks are now created using 75% wool/25% acrylic which means they keep their shape, keep your feet cosy in cold weather and cool on warmer days and are machine washable. It can be tricky to source suitable wool, where possible she buys locally and tries to use yarns made without air miles.
She also offers a free sock darning service when you buy a pair, to make them last even longer…the record so far is a pair her sock mentor made her 12 years ago and are still going strong.

You can find Joy knitting socks everywhere, traveling (on trains, buses…in the car …when she’s not driving!), indoors, outdoors but mostly in her comfy armchair in my home in Argyll. Her socks themselves are spread across the globe and are now worn in 3 continents and have traveled many miles including the final leg of the Round The World Clipper Race in 2024.
